Total shoulder replacement surgery is a major undertaking that will require an extensive recovery. And while it will all be worth it in the end, you’ll only do a fraction of your recovery in the hospital or surgery center. The majority of your recovery will occur at home, so you want to be smart about how you approach your home-based recovery. To make that a bit easier, we thought we’d spotlight a few “must-haves” that will make life a little simpler as you work to recover after total shoulder joint replacement surgery.
Easy-To-Wear Clothes
You’re not going to be able to get your arm over your head while you recover, which means getting dressed can be a bit more difficult. Before surgery, set out some button up shirts, shorts or pants with an elastic waistband and slip on shoes so that getting dressed isn’t a chore after your operation.
Detachable Shower Head
Follow your doctor’s instructions about showering or getting the incision site wet, but many people find it much easier to use a detachable shower head when showering after shoulder surgery. You’re not going to be able to lift your surgically repaired shoulder for a while, so a detachable shower head makes it easier to clean under and around the repaired arm.
Entertainment Options
Stock up on entertainment options before your surgery date arrives. Netflix or Hulu are great for a bit, but also find some entertainment options that stimulate your brain a bit. Sudoku puzzles, crosswords or a new book can all engage your brain during the first few weeks of your recovery when you’re at home.
A Water Bottle
Drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated can help ensure blood can easily flow to and from recovering structures, so make sure you drink plenty of water. Most people find that this is easier to accomplish if they have a large water bottle nearby at all times. Strive to drink and refill your water bottle 4-6 times a day so that you’re plenty hydrated throughout your recovery.
Extra Pillows
Finding a comfortable sleeping position can be a little difficult in your first few weeks after surgery, and many people find it helpful to have an extra pillow or two nearby so they can prop up their arm or head as needed to find a comfortable spot. Most people sleep on their side after total shoulder replacement, and using pillows to support your knees, shoulder or neck while you’re in this position can make falling asleep and staying asleep easier.
